What happened

Lundin Gold announced the discovery of two new copper-gold porphyry systems — named Sandia Northeast and Sandia Southeast — next to the Sandia deposit, in the Fruta del Norte district in southeastern Ecuador. With these discoveries, the number of porphyry centers identified in the district rises from five to seven, and the mineralized corridor next to the operating mine has doubled from about 5 km to at least 10 km.

What we learned

What this sequence of discoveries teaches isn't about the isolated geology of one deposit, but about exploration strategy. Lundin Gold didn't open an exploration front far from the mine — it used the Sandia deposit itself, discovered in 2025 and now spanning 1,600 meters by 700 meters wide and 1,000 meters deep, as an anchor to steer extension drilling around it. Porphyry systems tend to occur in families, controlled by the same geological structure and the same hydrothermal alteration event — finding one raises the statistical probability of another nearby, and that's exactly what recent drill holes confirmed: intercepts such as 909 meters at 0.46% CuEq at Sandia, or 454 meters at 0.31% CuEq at Sandia Northeast. None of these grades, on their own, impress anyone used to high-grade deposits. What underpins the viability here is scale: a mineralized body extending more than 900 meters at moderate grade can outvalue a smaller, higher-grade deposit, because the drilling cost per ton discovered falls as the corridor proves out larger.

For those allocating exploration capital, the practical lesson lies in where to put the next drilling dollar: drilling around an already-confirmed discovery has a higher success rate and more predictable cost per meter than opening a new area with no drilling history.
